ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Howard Ah-Tye

There are many books written about Chinese culture, but none has brought together in one book, the published works of a local historian who is part of the history he wrote. Did you know the Chinese were the first to grow asparagus, cultivate the "bing cherries", and use windmills for irrigation?

Howard Ah-Tye says his 15 plus years of journalism was: "in defense of all Chinese who contributed to the growth and development of Oakland, so that others will know how the first Chinese in America endured and faced the overt prejudices and discriminatory laws against Chinese..."

Howard has recorded Chinese history in America for "East-West, Asian Weekly, Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, California Living, and San Francisco Chinese Historical Society."
